Persuasive Paragraph

Posted in ELA A10 with tags , on January 24, 2010 by mills08

The story I chose to give my opinion on is Hey There, Wanna Buy a Tank? The story showed many bad things but some good things. One good thing is Canada is not exactly selling guns but they are selling pieces. Another good thing is they do not sell the weaponry to foreign countries but only the United States. A bad thing is that the weapons they sell to the United States are probably getting fired right back at our soldiers. When Canada sells weapons they are going straight to the states and after that we have no records what happens to them. For all we know the weapons could be up in Iraq. So for my opinion I think Canada selling weaponry to the United States is a very dangerous and bad thing.

Quests And Adventures

Quests and adventures is a great unit because there are battles, fights, quests, and new worlds. There are also protagonists that show leadership, courage, and heroism. The antagonists are also a great part of this unit because they start the conflicts. Without conflicts these books and movies would be pointless. The reason they would be pointless is because the conflicts always lead to quests, battles, and adventures! Those are the reasons why quests and adventures is such a loved category of story for many of people.

A book that I have read that shows quests and adventures is Lord Of The Rings The Fellowship Of The Ring written by JR Tolken. It Fits the Quests and Adventures so perfectly because there is a conflict which makes it so Frodo Baggins the main character of the story have to go on a quest. Also the ring that he has to carry leads to a battle at the end of the book. This shows that without conflict there would be no quests or adventures. There is also an antagonist who tries to get Frodo killed many of times which made the book that much better. This book fit this category very well and showed quests and adventures perfectly.

Science Fiction

Science fiction usually takes place in the future or the present but it is also fake like fantasy. It also has a scientific reason for certain events that cause trouble in the book. Also science fiction always involves new futuristic technology. Science fiction books also take place on other planets which means it involves fantasy. In most science fiction books technology is often considered evil. Like in I Am Legend they try to make a cure for cancer which turns every one into vampires and the world gets deserted and there is only one man left on it. That is what makes science fiction books so good is they have interesting things involving technology.

The book I am choosing is the chrysalids. It fits the science fiction genre because it has a situation where too much technology can destroy the world. The situation is there is a bomb that explodes and wipes out a lot of technology so the people in the future are basically living in the pioneer days. It also has a lot of new technology at the end story when the sea land lady used the strange thread like weapons to win the giant battle. And it also fits into the genre because it’s all fake because it involves mutants. These reasons are why I chose the chrysalids.

FANTASY

Fantasy is so much different from mystery and suspense because fantasy is completely fake. Mystery and suspense have instances where it could possibly be real but fantasy is just completely fake. That is why it is so great. It lets you see into a new world with interesting creatures and places. Also it always involves good vs. evil so there usually is always a battle which makes it that much better. Also there are always villains and heroes that make the books better. That is why fantasy is so great.

A fantasy book that I am choosing is JRR. Tokens The Hobbit. The reason I am choosing this book is because it fits the fantasy unit perfectly. It has dragons, heroes, villains, and a fake world. This book is so popular because it has fighting, adventuring, and treasure. All these things add up to make a great action packed book. Another reason it is so popular is because it was a great start to a great series. That is why I chose the hobbit as my favorite fantasy book.

THE UNEXPLAINED

Posted in ELA A10 with tags on December 18, 2009 by mills08

The unexplained makes such a great unit is because it has a lot of paranormal activity that we do not even know exists. The reason paranormal things are so interesting is because you never know if they are real or fake. They also consist of scary things like ghosts, crop circles, and aliens. Ghost stories are always so interesting because they are always somewhat scary and they could possibly be true. Also crop circles are very interesting because we actually have crops that have crop circles that no kind of man could make. Aliens are a interesting topic because people have taken pictures of strange shapes and lights in the sky so they have some evidence of aliens. All these topics are in movies because they are scary and the horror industry is one of the top rated movies. The movies are also very interesting and give a lot of information about the unexplained.

For my favorite unexplained thing I chose ghosts. The reason I chose ghosts is because they could possibly be real because people have had very strange things happen to them involving paranormal activity. They are also the scariest to me because they are the souls of the dead. The question is are they real? I think they could maybe be real but there has to be a lot more evidence. The reason I think they are possibly real is because people have seen strange shapes and have had things like their doors being opened and their water randomly turning on. This makes it seem like there could be ghosts because there is no other explanation for these things.  That is why I chose ghosts for my unexplained phenomena

MYSTERY AND SUSPENCE!

Posted in ELA A10 with tags on December 17, 2009 by mills08

Mystery and suspense is such a big deal to readers because it has many things that make it better than other genres. It has surprises, murder, villains, and crimes. These things all rolled up into one make a great suspense and mystery story. The climax is always a huge event that makes you want to keep reading. Another reason why these are great books is because you never know if the good guy will solve the problem which makes it that much more interesting. Mystery and suspense is also one of the best selling types of books because it can finish the story in multiple ways and still have a great ending. That is why mystery is one of the top selling types of book.

The story I am choosing is The Death Trap by Paul Gallico. The reason I chose this story is because it fits the mystery and suspense unit perfectly. It fits so well because it has an antagonist, a protagonist, it has suspense, and it has a great mysterious ending. The climax of this story is great because when Armando is not swimming up from the river it causes suspense and terror. The ending also is very mysterious because they get the crate out of the river and there is no one in it. Also when the Sherriff rigged the trap with colored finger traps it caused a lot of suspense because Armando was scared. This is why I chose the death trap as my story.
